FEAR descends on the Ngaka Modiri Molema Chess Tournament

Joseph Mwale, a.k.a. The FEAR outplayed all of his peers to win the Ngaka Modiri Molema Chess Tournament (RLOC 2016) held at Mmabatho High School. The tournament was proudly sponsored by Mmabatho Palms Resort as part of their education initiative with a donation of 200 tournament-branded T-shirts with sponsors’ logos.

The competition saw 228 of the best chess players from in and around South Africa battling it out to win the coveted title., The tournament went to The FEAR who is currently Malawi’s number one chess player and Kwa-Zulu Natal champion. There was also a surprising upset from Lonwabo Fihla, South Africa’s under-12 champion, who beat 2015 RLOC champion, Brighton Mthunzi, aged 34. Local champion, Moitse Benjamin Babuseng, who is only rated 1506th in the RLOC standings, managed to outperform much higher-ranking players to finish second overall.  Kgomotso Ndachipiwa won the B-section and best B-section woman categories.
